An uncommon collection of poems by Louis Magee, published posthumously in his honor and chosen from his archives by his closest friends and family. He was a US businessman and electrical engineer at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century - who had apparently spent several years in Berlin where he had become one of the pioneers of electric railway systems in Europe. In his preface Andrew D. White said Magee was remembered not only for his scientific papers and achievements but also for his ability to "offer his thoughts in verse.", New York and London: G. P. Hon debuterade som poet förra året med Metamorfos, också det en lyrisk bilderbok. Astartes mage, ett något kryptiskt namn kan tyckas, men Astarte är namnet på den mäktiga fruktbarhetens och krigets gudinna, besläktad med Ishtar hos folket i Kanaan, i Mesopotamiens och Feniciernas föreställnings-värld, c:a 1000 år före vår tideräkning. Vet man det är det enklare att gå in i Eva Fidjelands lyriska världsbild som är fylld av symboler, ordspråk och visdomsord: `Allt rör sig, ger ifrån sig ljud. Jag dansar mig en fri ande,´ säger hon inledande och för läsaren till en värld befolkad av ande och liv, själ och kropp, djur av olika slag. Katter mest. Det är en både mystisk och självklar beskrivning i ord och bild av katten som ett av människans äldsta husdjur. Jag tror, utan att säkert veta, att Astartes mage syftar på en Eva Fidjeland närstående katt, vars pälsiga mage kan vara mycket trevlig att smeka. Som hängiven kattvän har jag god erfarenhet av hur behagfullt katter visar upp sin pälsighet och låter sig smekas över magen. URGAMLA KULTURER Eva Fidjeland rör sig suveränt i de urgamla kulturernas föreställningsvärldar. Hon manar fram symboler för kärlek, liv och andlig klarhet, (det gjorde hon redan i debutboken Metamorfos), nämner djur och gudar vid namn. Bildernas färgskala känns lika urtida och lätt undflyende som de gamla gudarnas påverkan på människors sinnen. I bilder och detaljer av djurpälsar, speglas ett öga eller ett ansikte, gåtfulla. Bilderna, montage som bygger på modern teknik men skapar ändå en känsla av tidlöshet. Bast eller Bastet, kattgudinnan med kvinnokropp och katthuvud, i Egyptisk forntida religion var katten ett heligt och mycket populärt husdjur som balsamerades och begravdes som mumie. I en dikt skriver hon: `Drömmen är högsta form av vakenhet; den som blir medveten om sin livsdröm lever i flödestid.´ Ur kattperspektiv får bild och text en ny dimension. Kattens och människans gemenskap blir symboler för visdom. Egentligen handlar dikterna inte bara om kattdjur, utan om livets villkor. SPRÅKETS KLARHET Språkets klarhet, är som ett av regn nytvättat fönster, det är lätt att känna närhet i tid och rum; `Det som är gott finns inte på grund av vår vilja, utan trots den. Kärleken kräver ingenting, den vill bara välgång och godhet. Vi är förbundna med en ofattbar verklighet som fortsätter att existera även när vi förnekar den med viljan´. Och diktsamlingen slutar; `Troligen kom den nubiska katten hit efter järnåldern, nosande omkring i världen med stor oro, förundrad över allting, kanske i ren dödsångest. Profeterna förde en bitter kamp mot hennes dyrkan.´ Förhoppningsvis är detta bara början på en diktargärning som kan ge många nya inblickar i mystik och filosofi kring människans förhållande till katten, naturen och sig själv. Den lyriska formen lämpar sig så väl för att tolka det som är existentiellt. Lyriken är ju den svåraste av alla former av skrivande, den kan vara så levande och tidlös att den kan existera i tusentals år, som Astarte och kattgudinnan Bastet.
