He has also given us a photographic record and vivid descriptions of this "Stone Age" society. The author has saved a memory this society and its way of life from oblivion in perpetuity by this book. The descriptions are honest, neither lurid nor sensational. He describes the way the people lived without embellishment. It is a good read because Matthiessen was and is a superb wordsmith and he cared about these people and their ways which were foreign but with motiviations familiar to any student of human behavior.
