From the Preface: One outstanding hallmark of a profession is the willingness of its members to help one another learn and thereby, improve the services that the profession performs. A textbook is one means of communicating nursing knowledge, both to the student of nursing and the practicing professional nurse. The body of knowledge required to practice medical-surgical nursing is rapidly growing as the nursing profession continues to evolve. The fact that nursing knowledge is increasing is reflected in the size of this text. Modern patient care is based upon the holistic intertwining of information from a variety of disciplines, from the physical and social sciences as well as the arts. The professions of nursing and medicine are especially closely interrelated. Increasingly nurses are preforming activities that were formerly carried out by physicians. For example, nurses are assuming enlarging responsibilities in the area of emergency treatment, diagnosis and care of critically ill patients. Nurse practitioners with advanced preparation in specialized areas of clinical practice are increasing in numbers. It is fortunate for patients that nurses are gaining more clinical expertise since nursing spend more time with patients than physicians do.
