This is how Robert Bush describes the work of Grace King in his introduction to this anthology, containing sections of her estimated thirteen volumes of writing. Grace King wrote between 1865 and 1920, giving her views on the southern temper and cultural contribution, views that supplemented those of other writers of the period. The anthology provides a full range of King's writings, including chapters from her biography, Memories of a Southern Woman of Letters, and her major short fiction, including five uncollected stories and the best of her Balcony Stories.
