Il rally in Sardegna è un fatto sociale oltre che uno sport, essendo radicato nel territorio e nella cultura della maggior parte dei suoi abitanti. Nella memoria della gente i primi Rally Costa Smeralda sono infatti ricordati come un qualcosa di mitico, di speciale. Per tutti gli appassionati sardi di questa specialità, anche per me, Henri Toivonen resta ancora un'icona, una specie di Gigi Riva dei rally. La mia carriera di giornalista è iniziata nel 1984 commentando la gara smeraldina sulle frequenze dell'emittente locale Radio Hobby, proprio per seguire le gesta del campionissimo finlandese che vinse quel 7° Rally Costa Smeralda sulla Porsche nonostante avesse le stampelle. Poi nel 1994 la gara si fermò e riprese nel 1998 con il patrocinio della Sardegna Grandi Eventi, riacquistando con il tempo validità per l'italiano, ma solo nel 2004 in Sardegna sono tornati a correre i grandi campioni con l'arrivo del mondiale grazie al Rally Italia Sardinia (diventato poi Rally Italia Sardegna). E così è rifiorita di nuovo la grande passione dell'isola per i rally ed i suoi campioni degli anni duemila, Sainz, Solberg, Loeb, Gronholm, Hirvonen, Latvala ed Ogier. E quella nuova gara, il Rally Italia Sardegna appunto, è diventato un appuntamento fisso nel calendario del campionato del mondo, grazie alla selettività, alla spettacolarità ed alla bellezza degli sterrati dell'isola dei quattro mori.
