When steam locomotion was finally dispensed with by British Rail as 'outmoded and uneconomic', it was left to private groups and individuals to fight to preserve an integral part of our industrial heritage. Such preservation of working steam has proved successful beyond expectation and is due solely to the dedication and professionalism of these bodies. Steam centres, preserved lines and railways draw each year an increasing number of enthusiastic and informed visitors. In the early days of the railway networks each company was privately owned and each set about the task of building locomotives best suited to its needs and budgets. A particular aim of this book has been to present examples of as many different kinds of working locomotives as possible, irrespective of their operating gauge and without too much deference to the exact meaning of the word 'preserved'. On 21 November 1864 Waite married his first cousin Matilda Methuen (d.1922) at Woodville; they had eight children.Drought beset the north in 1864-66 but from 1869 Elder, Waite and N. E. Phillipson accumulated sheep and cattle runs from Beltana to the Queensland border, though after 1880 resumptions caused some loss of profits. A further 114-acre (46 ha) site nearby was given to the South Australian government for an agricultural high school.
