Although most of the processes used for the manufacture of polymer foams are well established, many producers have had to carry out development work over the last few years to adapt to new blowing agents which meet the requirements of the Montreal Protocol. This agreement has had repercussions worldwide and will continue to influence technical development for some time to come as the producers fine-tune formulations to try to match or exceed the material and process advantages provided by the original CFC blowing agents. Many of the applications for foam products have also been established for some time, e.g., thermal insulation for buildings, protective packaging, cushioning for bedding and furniture. Nevertheless, markets continue to grow as customers increasingly recognise and demand the comfort and other benefits that foams can provide. This Rapra Industry Analysis Report provides an overview of the current status of the foam industry. The implications of the Montreal Protocol for blowing agents and for foam production are discussed. The different polymeric foams are considered individually with discussion of key properties, material and processing development and end-use applications:.; Polyurethane, rigid and flexible; Polyolefin; Polystyrene; Polyvinyl chloride; Phenolics; Microcellular; Latex. The impact of other environmental influences is also examined, with discussion of waste recovery issues such as the Packaging Waste Directive and the End-of-Life Vehicle Directive. Whilst such issues frequently require foam manufacturers to carry out product and process development work to meet environmental requirements, foams have considerable environmental benefits when used for applications such as thermal insulation in buildings or weight reduction on vehicles. About the author... David Eaves graduated from the University of Birmingham and stayed on to complete a doctorate on polymerisation reactions. He joined the Dunlop Research Centre in 1956 to work initially on polymer characterisation and later on aspects of Ziegler-Natta polymerisation of dienes. After two overseas spells opening and managing satellite research operations, he returned to manage the support technologies of what became Dunlop Technology Division, providing support on product and process development (including latex and polyurethane foam) to Dunlop's various operating divisions. He left Dunlop in 1986 to join BXL Plastics, Foam Division (part of the BP Chemicals group) as Technical Manager. The company produces a wide range of polyolefin foams using the unique nitrogen autoclave process. He was responsible for product and process development, quality control and provision of technical support to production and sales. After participation in a management buy-out from BP Chemicals in 1994, David retired as Technical Director of the resulting new company, Zotefoams plc, in 1998.
