Effra Verse is the product of the "Effra Poets' Project" - a creative writing poetry initiative, brought into being by a group of individuals who use Effra Resource Centre in Brixton London. The Centre's purpose and function is to provide a safe space in which mental health service users may enjoy social interaction, support and encouragement in their daily lives - A necessity for people who experience significant mental distress of one kind or another in their lives. It is a safe place in an otherwise seemingly unsafe world, a much needed asset of considerable value in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is jointly run by the Borough Council, NHS Lambeth, and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust 'SLAM'. In 2006, a group of Effra service users piloted a small paperback version entitled the 'Effra Verse.' Using in-house resources and the services of a local printer for a modest sum, it was well-received within a small circle. In many ways it was a dry run for the present, professionally printed and published offering, which we hope will receive a sympathetic reading - amongst poetry enthusiasts and other well-disposed hearts. The publication of this present printed volume, which is accompanied by an audio disc of some of our poets speaking and singing their own verse has been generously funded by SLaM Charitable Funds. Users of mental health services, whose image has for far too long been less than positive in the eyes of the wider community, have tended not to reveal news of their own experiences of mental ill-health for fear of stigmatisation and the real hurt which may result. Many professionals all too often fear little better. Many service users can also recall some GP's referring to psychiatrists and psychiatric workers as mere quacks. Fortunately, these days there are real signs of a far more grown-up attitude emerging. Perhaps this current volume will lend support to such welcome changes regarding the real status of mental health. After all, statistics testify to the increasing prevalence of mental ill health in the community at large. Addressing and adjusting to the demands upon the individual made by modern ways of living tends to lead to a disregard of the spiritual needs of the creature. A simple spontaneous response to the unfolding events of life is what we are designed for as developing beings. Modern life, some may say 'western' life, is full of constrictions and imperatives that crowd out the natural response. The contributors hope that you, the reader, will derive some pleasure and entertainment from these pages. We are not only well-intentioned, but are also highly motivated. The writing, design and decoration are all the work of service users involved in the Effra Poets' Project. Poetry is a natural balm, so smile and feel good with this book and accompanying audio CD at hand; ideally when you are in bed, the park or by the ocean, at a moment when it is right to put away the cares of the day.
