Ferrari, while using many great intuitions of Augustine, and of Husserl in his famous investigations of internal timeconsciousness, explores the different phenomena which we call memory: retention, recollection, and perception of the temporal flux of consiousness. With great originality and Sachkontakt he continues in some ways, and perfects in others, earlier analyses of these phenomena, especially those of Husserl. Particularly admirable is the author's strict and absolute rigor of following the principle of returning back to things, of delving into the inexhaustible differentiations and wealth of the phenomena, and to never content himself with any mere repetition of the opinions of others. In this respect. this book can be regarded as a materful application of the phenomenological method, as an example of what a rigorously methodic way of doing philosophy ia and schould be, namely, to put it in Thomas Aquinas' words: not to study the opinions of philosophers but the truth of things.
