The cars themselves are fascinating, particularly the several models designed and built in New Zealand, but the book's scope goes far further than this. Roading, licensing, automobile associations and clubs, racing and reliability trials, the social side, technical development, pioneering new routes - all these and more are discussed and illustrated in a wealth of romantic detail. Of particular interest is the final chapter, which deals with the Veteran movement of today which began in the early 1950s and has been gathering a rapid momentum ever since. Considering its remoteness to sources of motor vehicles the country quite quickly adopted the car. This study examines the experiences of the motoring pioneers, the epic journeys they undertook on roads scarcely fit for horse and cart, let alone the fragile early vehicles, some of which were actually designed and built in NZ. Probably the first book to seriously record the earliest days of the motor car in NZ and a fine effort. 230 pages including two appendices, index, b/w photos throughout, decorative e/papers, b/w art title page double spread.
