The English preparatory school is in the process of being transformed out of all recognition.Gone or at least fast disappearing are the days of congealed porridge,doses of Agaroll,petit beurre biscuits,evening chapel,bullying and eccentric masters and matrons.Arthur Marshall conducts us through an imaginary day in one such school.He does so with nostalgia and a keen sense of humour.The reader is caught on a knife edge between tragedy and comedy - for such are the ingredients of this book.Mr Marshall's text,however,is firmly rooted in reality.He has gathered letters,reminiscences from prep school boys and has hunted the pages of published literature to find material which conveys the atmosphere of these strange establishments.He writes of what it was like,in recent years or long ago,to be packed off from home at a very early age to become a pupil in one of these extremely English institutions.On one thing all seem agreed - all school boys took whatever came,whether agreeable or the converse,as being inthe natural order of things.Nobody ever dreamt of complaining,either to parents or,least of all,to the staff.There was an unconscious conspiracy of silence.It is this which Mr Marshall wishes to break before it is too late.Arthur Marshall was educated at a Hampshire prep school,Oundle and at Christ's College,Cambridge.He was a master and housemaster at Oundle from 1931-54,departing only to join the Intelligence Corps during the war.After serving asprivate secretary to Lord Rothschild he became a full-time journalist and broadcaster in 1964.He has written for the'Sunday Telegraph','Punch',the 'Listener',the 'Times Literary Supplement',the 'New Statesman',the 'New Standard'and the 'Spectator'.He is also the author of several books,including 'Girls Will Be Girls' (1974) and 'I'll Let You Know' (1981).'
