The "Paths on Life's Way" research project in British Columbia, Canada, and the "Life Patterns" project in the Australian state of Victoria were developed independently, but offer similar data sets on the impact of social forces, policies, life events, and other factors on the life-span development of research subjects, thereby offering a means to comparatively examine the formation of a generation, those children that grew up in Canada and Australia during the 1970s. After discussing strengths and weaknesses of theoretical approaches to the study of life-courses (with the analysis of the Canadian data drawing on theories of reproduction developed by Pierre Bourdieu while the Australian research draws primarily on theories of individualization, risk, and identity formation developed by Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens), they present chapters comparing government policies, particularly education and labor policies; young peoples' perceptions of social, economic, and cultural opportunities and constraints; educational and labor experiences; the impact of social changes on personal relationships; and issues of health and well-being.
