A revival in detailing has brought forth a new breed of artisans who are creating innovative elements with a rare variety of traditional materials. This groundbreaking work explores the contemporary details being used in houses all over the country, showcasing the work of over sixty artisans and 100 projects. Full color photographs depict the details in their actual settings, providing inspiration for professionals and homeowners alike. nice tight and bright with price clipped dust jacket, Longmeadow Press, 1992-10-01, Elton Engineering Books, Bookseller's catalogue, London, June 1991. Printed wrappers, 8vo,. 158 pp, ills. 345 entries. From the introduction: "The form and scale of buildings and civil engineering structures reflect the development and understanding both of natural and man-made materials. This catalogue is devoted to the books which chart that development, reflecting the constant and still-continuing search for reliability and perfection which has occupied engineers, architects, manufacturers and scientists for centuries. For example, the early experiments on steel by Kirkaldy and others, published in the 1860s and 1870s, led to its widespread use in preference to cast and wrought iron, making possible such monumental structures as the Forth Bridge and the steel-framed skyscrapers of Chicago. Similarly, the great strength and superior qualities of Portland cement over natural cement were gradually revealed through both testing and use in civil engineering. These qualities led in the late 19th century to its being combined with steel to make reinforced concrete, and the impact of this new material on architecture is vividly demonstrated by the innovative designs of architects and engineers such as Perret, Maillart and Freyssinet. On the other hand, the history of timber structures can be seen in the increasing efficiency of connection techniques, from traditional scarf joints of 17th century master carpenters such as Jousse and Wilhelm, through the bolted laminated arches of the French engineer Emy, to sophisticated glued timber shells of the post-war period. The books have been divided into sections according to subject, but there is an index of authors at the end, as well as a selective bibliography of the books and articles I have used in preparing the notes. Very Good., Elton Engineering Books, Bookseller's catalogue, London, June 1991, University of Virginia Press, October 2005. Trade Paperback. Used - Good. The first volume in the Urgent Matters series, 'Trojan Goat: A Self-Sufficient House 'traces thedesign and construction of the University of Virginia's whimsically named, award-winning entry in the 2002 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. John D.Quale, the architectural advisor and coordinator for the project, provides here afirsthand account of the creation of the 750 square-foot solar-poweredhouse. Aiming to make the remarkable achievements of the projectbetter known, while highlighting potential future applications for the practice ofarchitecture, Trojan Goat provides an exciting moment-to-moment documentary of themaking of this environmentally friendly house. Designed and built by a team ofstudents and faculty from the School of Architecture and the School of Engineeringand Applied Science, the house combines the use of sustainable materials withthoughtful design and technological innovation. According to thereceived statistics, building use accounts for one-half of the total energy burnteach year in the United States, a greater amount by far than that consumed per annumby automobiles. Quale argues that, based on statistics such as these and thepositive reception of Trojan Goat, there should be greater support for sustainablebuilding practices in the United States, including an increase in design-buildopportunities for students of architecture.
