In the text there are an additional 320 illustrations of the antiquities of Pompeii. One of the fold-outs is a large street map of Pompeii that unfolds to 62 cm x 49.5 cm (24.5" wide by 19.5" tall). Text in German. Note that this 1884 fourth edition, revised and expanded, has 676 pages, while the 1856 edition has only 438 pages with fewer plates and illustrations. Bound in the original green decorated cloth. This large, heavy book may require extra postage for Priority and International shipments, but only the standard charge for media mail.. OVERBECK, Johann Friedrich (17891869). A German historical painter, the leader of the revival of Christian art in the nineteenth century. He was born at Lilbeck. July 4. 1789. received a careful education, and in 1806 went to Vienna to study at the Academy. His opposition to the pseudo-classic notions then prevailing at that institution resulted in his expulsion in 1810, in company with several like-minded fellow students. They proceeded to Rome, where they became known as the Nazarites, because of their artistic views. (See Pre-raphaelites. ) To Overbeck, the high priest of this creed, art was a religious question, and he held that the true home of art is within the soul before the altar of the Church.
