He spent a year or more in Paris as a diplomatic agent, was at Madrid about 1687 accredited by King James to the Court of Charles II., the bigoted and half imbecile King of Spain who left as a legacy to his country that fierce war of succession which was to come so largely into my life and of which I shall have much to tell.
