When he, incredulous and anguished, inquired as to why he was being cashiered, he was told that the investigations chronicled in Bird of Passage and Face of Crime portrayed him more as a cartoon character, such as Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam, than as a private detective and that his alliance with the PIA was Carlyle Current, our protagonist, was summoned before the elders of the Private Investigators Association (PIA) to be advised that his membership with that organization was being revoked. Current requested that his disqualification be held in abeyance until the elders had time to review The Second Wave which discloses his efforts to save billions of dollars for the U.S. government and taxpayers. They agreed to withhold judgment until they had "weighed the evidence." The reader is offered the same opportunity.
