Just like in other Dan Barry stories, he has his two best friends by his side this time as well: Satan, the black stallion and Black Bart, the wolf dog. At the beginning of the story, Dan lives a quiet life in the mountains alongside Kate Cumberland and their five years old daughter, Kate, but things change soon and Dan takes to the woods to avenge a grave injustice. He leaves his civilized life for an environment that he knows much better, the wilderness and he fights evil there like no other cowboy ever has.Max Brand stories provide not only quick-paced action, but psychological insight as well and The Seventh Man is no exception. The story is far from being just another Western story - it is much deeper, much more sensitive and at the same time much more violent as well. All the characters in the book, including the principal character's animal companions that are depicted with the same deep insight as the human characters, are complex, the good ones just as much as the villains, with the division between good and evil being far less conspicuous than one would expect.
