Die umfangreiche poetische Produktion des Gregor van Nazianz ist bisher in keiner kritischen Ausgabe zugänglich. Diese kommentierte Edition von vier Gedichten (I.2.17; II.1.10, 19, 32) wird ergänzt von einer Einführung in die Dichtung Gregors, ihren Inhalt sowie ihre literarischen und formalen Eigentümlichkeiten. Im Anhang sind mehrere anonyme Prosa-Paraphrasen der edierten Gedichte aus byzantinischer Zeit angefügt. Neben textkritischen und exegetischen Beiträgen enthält der Kommentar vor allem eine Fülle von Parallelen aus der griechischen Poesie von Homer und Hesiod über die attische Tragödie bis zu den hellenistischen und kaiserzeitlichen Dichtern, vor allem dem von Gregor offenbar besonders geschätzten Kallimachos.Das illustriert Gregors ungewöhnliche Belesenheit und seinen steten Rückgriff auf pagane Dichtertexte im durchweg christlichen Zusammenhang. Darüber hinaus verzeichnet der Kommentar zahlreiche Stellen aus der byzantinisch-hochsprachlichen Dichtung, die den Einfluss der Poesie Gregors bezeugen.
