A scarce and significant book in the library of golf for two primary reasons. This is the first book written by Horace Hutchinson, a monumental figure in golf both for his playing prowess and his writing ability. He authored more than a dozen golf books, countless golf articles, and dozens of books on a wide variety of subjects. Most importantly, this is the first book of golf instruction offered for public sale, the scant earlier writings on the matter having been printed for private distribution. It is approximately the twentieth book on golf published. The publisher, William Blackwood, was a personal friend of Hutchinson, and it is thought by bibliophiles that the production run was most likely limited to 1000 copies or less. The need and success of this book can be inferred by its long production run of fourteen editions including several revisions over twenty years. In a self-deprecating manner, Hutchinson would later write in his autobiography "The only excuse to be made for it is that it was a very little one." Blue decorative cloth lightly tanned on spine, 1" line of loss from insect intrusion near the upper rear corner. Eps tanned in spots from the pastedown offset, name on ffep, no internal soiling, notes, underlining, or other markings to this tight copy. Not in D & J. Protected in mylar.
