An early edition of 'The World Displayed', illustrated with a detailed folding map and many plates. Documenting the voyages of Columbus. Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and eight plates. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear. ESTC citation number T135988. Incomplete in one volume, being volume I of a total of twenty volumes. The fourth edition of this work. An interesting work on travels and voyages, published at a time when knowledge of the world was expanding decade by decade. Interest in the outer world was expanding as explorers had been documenting their travels over the past couple of centuries. This volume tells of Christopher Columbus' voyages to America, and the discoveries of the Spaniards from the death of Columbus to Corte's expedition. With an introduction by Samuel Johnson. In a full mottled calf binding. Externally, generally smart. A small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small cracks to the head and tail of the rear joint. Some light marks to the boards. Light rubbing to the spine and joints. Hinges are starting but remain firm. Small amount of worming to the head of the front pastedown and front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Folding map with some discolouration, and a small tape repair to the reverse. Small wormhole to the head of the frontispiece, effecting image only a small amount. Prior owner's ink inscription to the reverse to the title page. Small chip to the fore edge of the title page.
