Bound in later brown half calf over marbled boards with new endpapers. Seven gilt bands to the spine with gilt titles on red morocco label in the second compartment and gilt date 1725 at the base of the spine. Condition very good, the binding is in fine condition. The internal condition is very good, complete, the binding is tight with no loose or missing pages.second and third leaves of the preface shaved at upper corner with a little loss, 5 pages with minor tears with no loss, with just a couple of fox marks and very slight toning the pages are very clean throughout. Ownership inscription of John Bagalay 1738 and also Joseph Osborn to verso of last page. The book is divided into Five Parts: Part I - Containing A Discovery of the most secret practices of the Secular, and Regular Romish Priests in their Auricular Confession. Part II - A True Copy of the Pope's yearly Bull of Indulgences and Pardon of Sins, to all those that serve in the War against the enemies of the Romish Religion. The Explanation of The Bull, with some Remarks upon it. Part III - An account of their Masses, privileg'd Altars, Transubstantiation, and Purgatory, and of the Means, the Priests make use of, to delude the People. Part IV - Of the Inquisitors, and their Practices in several Instances. Part V - Of their Prayers, Adoration of Images, and Relicks, &c. Theophilus Gates (1787-1846) was an itinerant preacher, nicknamed the Battle-Axe, a name drawn from the Book of Jeremiah. With his followers they established a commune near Pottsdown, Pennsylvania in a place they called Free Love Valley. They did not abide by many of the core sacraments of Christianity, preached radical free love and nudity, and believed that all things should be shared in common, including husbands and wives. A number of its members were arrested for indecency and he himself was eventually run out of the area, ending the movement. This book contains reference to Richard the Third in the entries for the year 1485 (on page 209), the book refers to: 'III. King Richard the Third (or rather the Duke of Glocester) having waded through a Flood of Royal Blood to the Throne of England, was kill'd, this Year, on the 22th of August, at Bosworth-Fight, in Leicestershire, and carried off the Field of Battle in an inglorious and indecent Manner (being laid all naked a-cross the back of a Horse) to Leicestershire, from whence he came but the Day before with the greatest Pomp and Magnificence, and was there buried, dishonourably, in the Church of the Gray Friers, after he had usurp'd the Crown for Two years and two Months. The inside front endpaper has had the previous owner's bookplate from King's College, London and crest pasted down and stamped "cancelled" in blue ink. Also on this page is an ex-libre label which reads: "Theology, University Depository". Cover and spine show wear, particularly to the edges, some scuffs, rubbing, and discoloration. The inner, front-hinge contains a crack, though the integrity of the binding is solid. All leaves are securely bound, and are complete. Leaves are in sturdy, beautiful condition with no tears or creasing, yet show age discoloration and some foxing and light staining as would be expected. Text is dark, legible and fully intact -- no blemish compromises the texts comfortable readability. Virtually no marginalia with the exception of "explanatory notation" in pencil indicating "by Anthony Parkinson" twice within the introductory pages. Overall a very good copy in a solid binding, holding a fascinating piece of 18th century history. Dimensions: 8 and 13/16" high x 7 and 2/16 wide x 1" thick.
