Editions 10/18, 2001. poche. 2001. Poche. 189 pages. Cover worn<br>An alternate cover edition for this book can be found here. Giants, dwarfs, tricksters--here is the dar k side of Dickens at its most powerful and bizarre. The story of 'Little Nell' gripped the nation when it first appeared. Describ ed as a 'tragedy of sorrows', it tells of Nell uprooted from a se cure and innocent childhood and cast into a world where evil take s many shapes, the most fascinating of which is the stunted, lech erous Quilp. He is Nell's tormentor and destroyer, and it is his demonic energy that dominates the book. The Old Curiosity Shop i s a novel of contrasts: youth and old age, beauty and deformity, freedom and restraint. Expansively comic, sentimentally tragic, i t is sometimes fairytale, sometimes myth and often Victorian life at its most bleak--haunted by the figures that live in the shado ws, some of the strongest of Dickens's many creations. ., Lee and Shepard, 1972, 2.5, Book House, 2011. 25x17x1cm. 2011.
