He was born in Bukoba, Tanzania, where from 1974 to 1983 he worked as both a teacher and as head teacher. Because he advocated political reform, he was detained without trial following his abduction from exile in Swaziland by Tanzanian government agents in December 1983. He was released in April 1985 due to failing health and banished to his home village. Between 1989 and 1996 he was editor and publisher of a political journal, Tanzania Argus-Overseas Edition (later Africa Argus). He currently lives in Denmark.
