New York: Wm. H. Colyer, 1839. Second American. Hardcover. Good/none as issued. Rebacked in the original boards with the original label. Much shelf wear to the corners and edges of the book, foxed / stained throughout; previous ownership inscriptions of a Johnstown, NY family to the front endpaper and the title page, 1857 and 1839 respectively. In the 1922 sale catalogue of the Dickens collection belonging to famed Dickens authority William Glyde Wilkins is found Lot no. 5 a "Very Rare Collection of Editions With the 'Colyer' Imprint" Thie edition of Oliver Twist offered here is included among those six Dickens titles published by Wm. H. Colyer between 1838 and 1843. In its description of this edition the OCLC notes that "Beginning of text on p. [13] "Among other public buildings in the town of Mudfog" indicates this edition was taken from Bentley's Miscellany. The first sentence was changed for the English edition of three volumes in 1839." Colyer and Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia were in a race to publish Oliver Twist in America. L&B, having rushed out an unillustrated two volume edition followed by a one volume with four illustrations, eventually published an edition with all the Cruikshank art. The Colyer title while considered to be the second American edition contains four of the original illustrations, to wit: "Oliver Asks for More"; "Oliver claimed by his affectionate friends"; "Monks and the Jew"; "Mr. Bumble degraded in the eyes of the Paupers". Books and other items ship promptly with a tracking number and (generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible. London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1838. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. George Cruikshank. pp: [iv][1]2-331 [3]; [iv][1]2-307; [iv][1]2-315. THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Three mismatched bindings. Volumes I and II are bound in dark green leather over marbled boards with raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration to the spine. Volume III is bound in full blue leather with elaborate gilt decoration to the top board, gilt trim, red and gold title piece. 'Twist' first appeared in serial form in Bentley's Miscellany beginning February, 1837. The final issue was in March, 1839. There was no installment in June, 1837 due to the death of Mary Hogarth. The three volume set was published in September, 1838, six months before the final monthly part. There were reportedly only 528 copies printed. George Cruikshank illustrated the monthly parts and these illustrations were used for the triple decker. The final 'fireside' plate in Volume III was considered to be of poor standard and was suppressed at the request of Dickens. It was replaced with the 'Rose, Maylie and Oliver' plate. This issue has the second plate. Each of the three volumes have 'Boz' listed as the author on the title page. In spite of the variant binding, this is a near fine set with no sign of foxing. Volumes I and II have small ownership stickers on the front paste downs and previous owner's name on the reverse of the front endpapers. Volume III, with no half-title page, has a Dickens bookplate laid in. The story of an innocent boy who became entangled in the London underground but found redemption., Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1838, 4<

London, Chapman & Hall, [Circa 1850] . 'A New Edition, Revised and Corrected'; 8vo (230 x 160 mm); a reissue of the 1846 first single volume edition published by Bradbury and Evans, engraved frontispieces and a further 24 illustrations by George Cruikshank, very mild, random spotting to preliminary leaves, top outer corner of p.45 missing (probably during printing and cutting). some gatherings slightly loose but holding, marginal stain to fore-edge of p.242, not affecting text, short closed tear to top edge p.162; publisher's green cloth, bumped and worn at extremities, ablation (?plate removal) to upper endpapers, with a chip to bottom edge of flyleaf, two marks to rear pastedown but in all a very good, early copy. 'When Bentley decided to publish Oliver in book form before its completion in his periodical, Cruikshank had to complete the last few plates in haste. Dickens did not review them until the eve of publication and objected to the "Fireside" plate ("Rose Maylie and Oliver")... Dickens had Cruikshank design a new plate which retained the same title [The "Church" plate]... This Church plate was not completed in time for incorporation into the early copies of the book but it replaced the Fireside plate in later copies'., 0<
