This, with choice engravings from the ''England and Wales,'' ''Southern Coast,'' and others of the celebrated Turner series, he would adduce to illustrate his course of instruction. Mr. Leitch also urged that we should make frequent visits to the National Gallery, and the South Kensington Museum, and other collections, to learn what we could from works in colour there by Turner and other great artists, whether in landscape or figures, and he always maintained that the laws of harmony in colour were as fixed as those of sound. To break away from what he called the instinct of the gifted painters, which the ignorant miscall originality, was simply, he said, to be eccentric. Like other great teachers he laid much stress on the mastery of the lead pencil, or port crayon, and only after proficiency had been attained in these would he consent to give lessons. I am speaking now of 1866, for Mr. Leitch had, for many years previously, given up teaching in the general sense of the word, and at this period it was a great favour to obtain artistic lessons from him. In colouring he insisted on what he called scale practice--that is, the laying on of various tints in full flat washes, and, when they were quite dry, putting on other tints over them, but still retaining the full force of both. The next stage was drawing with liquid full colour any forms which were to be in the work, such as trees, mountains, &c, into which forms, while wet, he would strike deeper and varied tints so as to produce the ''palpitation'' of the colour as in nature. Garish colouring he detested. The masters knew, he said, that harmony could only be procured by a compromise between the artist''s materials and nature''s light and brilliancy. Body colour he...
