Of Wounds of the HEAD. WOUNDS in the head may be very different according to the instrument with which they are inflicted, and the nature of the part injured. The instrument which gave the stroke may either puncture, cut, or bruise; and the impression received from it may be more or less deep: thus the soft and external parts only may be injured, or the skull and brain may have been hurt at the same time: and these differences in the wounds will necessarily be attended with different symptoms. 1 Do not propose in this place to confine myself to the distinctions of these wounds which have in general been made by authors since Hippocrates, as I flatter myself the method I am about to lay down, will set this important subject in a clearer light.
