The following evening the same band played selections from Bellini's Norma. Van de Velde (1818-1898), described on the title page as "late lieutenant" of the Dutch Royal Navy, worked initially for over a decade at the topographical office at Jakarta, eventually becoming director. An accomplished draughtsman, his Gezigten uit Neêrlands Indië (1843-45) is one of the finest plate books on Indonesia (the attractive frontispieces to the present work are taken from his sketches and the maps based on his originals). In 1844 ill health forced him to return to Europe by way of Sri Lanka and South Africa, where his mission work, particularly with French ships, earned him the Legion d'honneur. He was later involved with the fledgling Red Cross, acting as an intermediary in the Second Schleswig War (1864).<
