New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1997. First edition. Stated. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good/very good. xviii, 634 p. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. A long-overdue biography of the courageous woman whose landmark book, SILENT SPRING, changed how we think about the world we live in. Based on personal documents and reminiscences previously unavailable, this book illuminates Carson's personal life as well as her contribution to the contemporary environmental movement. The biography of the ecologist and nature writer whose book "Silent Spring" began a movement that transformed the way we understand ourselves and the living world. Carson blew the whistle on the petro-chemical industry at a time when pesticides were regarded as a miracle cure all. When "Silent Spring" appeared in 1962 it did more than any single publication or event to alert the world to the hazards of enviromental pollution., Henry Holt and Company, 1997, 3, Harvey Miller, London, first edition, 1974. Cloth, blindstamped cover device, folio, 38 cm,. 175 pp, 346 ills (8 in colour), facs, 1 map. From the blurb - "The Peterborough Psalter in Brussels, an elaborately illustrated early 14th century English manuscript, was produced by a group of artists whose work has survived in other books of the period: the Ramsey Psalter in New York and in St. Paul-in-Lavantthal, Austria, and the Gough Psalter in Oxford. These books are linked in style and pictorial subjects to several others, the Barlow Psalter and Canonici Apocalypse in Oxford and the Crowland Apocalypse in Cambridge. Together these six manuscripts - chiefly made for use in Fenland monasteries - reveal a great deal about important aspects of Gothic manuscript illumination: the artistic personality and scope of individuals, even anonymous ones, the working procedure of a secular atelier; and the roles of patrons in commissioning and acquiring manuscripts. Reconstruction of the Fenland group is intended not only as a study of these fine manuscripts, some of them relatively unknown, but as a model for the future investigations of one of the richest periods of English illumination. All the miniatures from these six manuscripts are reproduced in this volume, together with much comparative illustrative material. The detailed discussion includes tables of Historiated Initial Subjects in English Psalters c. 1300-1400; Apocalypse Subjects in the Fenland and related Apocalypses; and Typological Miniatures and Verses of the Peterborough Psalter in Brussels. There are Appendices with full descriptions of each manuscript, and transcriptions of the Calendars in the Peterborough Psalter and the Ramsey Psalter. There is also a detailed Bibliography, Index of Manuscripts and General Index. Top edge a trifle duststained, otherwise Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper., Harvey Miller, London, first edition, 1974, 1974, 4, New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company, 1997. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good (). xviii, 634, [2] pages. Frontis illustrations. Book includes Acknowledgments, Sources for Illustrations, Illustrations. Prologue, Afterword, Notes, Bibliography, and Index. Small tear and crease at top corner of dust jacket. Inscribed and dated by Linda Lear on the title page. Inscription reads: For Bill Becker, Whose loyalty and support sustained over many years. With admiration and esteem, Linda Lear, Sept. 27, 1997. By drawing on previously unavailable sources and on interviews with those who knew her, Linda Lear gives a compelling portrait of this heroic woman, illuminating the origin of her connection with nature and of her determination to save what she loved. Lear reveals the unexpected influence of Carson's early experience with industrial pollution, and examines Rachel Carson's life-changing encounter with the possibility of global extinction in the frightening days of the early Cold War. Linda Jane Lear (born February 16, 1940) is an American historian of science and biographer. Lear developed an interest in Rachel Carson while teaching environmental history in the 1970s. She conducted over 300 interviews over 15 years, eventually meeting Carson's former assistant, Shirley Briggs, and editor, Paul Brooks. She published her biography Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature in 1997; two years later it received the Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize from the History of Science Society. She has continued to write extensively on Carson, contributing introductions to a variety of new editions of her works and editing her unpublished writings for publication. Rachel Louise Carson (May 27, 1907 - April 14, 1964) was an American marine biologist, author, and conservationist whose book Silent Spring and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Carson began her career as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, and became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s. Her widely praised 1951 bestseller The Sea Around Us won her a U.S. National Book Award, recognition as a gifted writer, and financial security. Her next book, The Edge of the Sea, and the reissued version of her first book, Under the Sea Wind, were also bestsellers. This sea trilogy explores the whole of ocean life from the shores to the depths. Late in the 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially some problems that she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was the book Silent Spring (1962), which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented share of the American people. Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides. It also inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Carson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. Derived from a Kirkus review: A sweeping, analytic, first-class biography of Rachel Carson. Carson may have had a forceful mother, may have grown up in iron-and-steel Pittsburgh, had one storied intellectual mentor after another, toiled in the trenches of the Fish and Wildlife Service for many years; but important as all this may have been in shaping her vision of the natural world--and these moments are given their due, as this book is formidably detailed--Lear concentrates her efforts on Carson the writer, both of books (Under the Sea-Wind, The Sea Around Us, The Edge of the Sea, and, of course, Silent Spring) and of a wealth of magazine articles, where Carson was convinced she would make enough money to devote herself to full-time writing. Carson understood that she had the enviable ability to combine a scientific background with a liquid prose style to communicate the workings of our mysterious, intricate living world with passion, speaking not just to the converted but to the sprawling, educated, postwar middle class. Though intensely private, she was also shrewdly aware of how best to mix magazine serial rights with book publication dates, how to get in the running for various awards and prizes. Lear fleshes out the portrait with Carson's friends, agent, and publishers; her tumultuous family life; her myriad illnesses (including the cancer that killed her); and how, in characteristic nonconformist fashion, Carson held tight to her femininity in the masculine world of nature writing. Lear provides anecdotes and intelligently overviews the genesis and guiding currents of Carson's work. Call this biography definitive., Henry Holt and Company, 1997, 2.75, New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1937. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. xii, 430, xvi, [4] pages. Illustrations. Footnotes. Index. DJ worn, torn, chipped and soiled. The Baltimore Sun is the largest general-circulation daily newspaper based in the American state of Maryland and provides coverage of local and regional news, events, issues, people, and industries. Founded in 1837, it is owned by tronc (formerly known as Tribune Publishing). The Sun was founded on May 17, 1837, by printer/publisher Arunah Shepherdson Abell (1806-1888) and two associates, William M. Swain (1809-1868) and Azariah H. Simmons, recently from Philadelphia, where they had started and published the Philadelphia Public Ledger. Abell was born in Rhode Island, where he began journalism with the Providence Patriot. He later worked with newspapers in New York City and Boston. The Abell family owned The Sun until 1910, when the local Black and Garrett families gained a controlling interest; they retained the name A. S. Abell Company for the parent company. Mr. Johnson wrote the first six chapters. Mr. Kent wrote chapters VII-X . Mr. Mencken wrote chapters XI to XVIII . and Mr. Owens wrote the section beginning with chapter XIX and running to the end. Gerald White Johnson (1890 - March 22, 1980) was a journalist, historian, and biographer. Over his nearly 75-year career he was known for being "one of the most eloquent spokespersons for America's adversary culture". He was a member of the American Expeditionary Force. He was the first professor of journalism at the University of North Carolina. Johnson worked for The Evening Sun of Baltimore from 1926 to 1943, when he left to concentrate on writing. Frank Richardson Kent (1877-1958) was an American journalist and political theorist of the 1920s and 1930s. He was one of the leading conservative critics of the New Deal of Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a daily column that reached millions of readers across the country. Historians group him with David Lawrence, Walter Lippmann, Mark Sullivan, and Arthur Krock as influential political commentators in the 1930s. He was based in Baltimore, where he started at the Baltimore Sun in 1900. After 1922 the Sun papers syndicated his column of political commentary to 140 papers., Alfred A. From the blurb - "The recent discovery of an unknown fourteenth-century English manuscript in a German Cistercian convent has brought to light an exquisite, richly illustrated psalter, which is analysed and illustrated here for the first time. Although this remarkable find in Lichtenthal Abbey, near Baden-Baden, had been identified as belonging to a group of manuscripts associated with the prominent and royally-connected Bohun family, neither its illustrations nor its relationship to other Bohun manuscripts had until now been fully explored. In tracing the history of the Bohun family and their manuscript patronage, Professor Sandler places the Lichtenthal Psalter as a product of the 1380s in company with three other psalters of similar format, each produced by the closely knit group of scribes and artists who worked in the Bohun family residence at Pleshey Castle in Essex. She describes in detail the contents of the manuscript, its text and decoration, and offers evocative descriptions and penetrating interpretations of the meticulously depicted images that illustrate the Calendar, the Psalms, and the Office of the Cross. The author also examines in particular the style and execution of the historiated initials and bas-de-page Old Testament scenes that illustrate the psalms in a continuous narrative sequence from the Creation to the Life of Moses. She compares these to the pictorial programs of the related Bohun psalters, and provides further evidence for the identification of the scribes and artists whose skill and inventiveness created one of the most outstanding group of illuminated manuscripts in fourteenth-century England. Every full-page miniature in the Lichtenthal Psalter is here reproduced in colour and in the size of the original. In addition there are enlarged detail reproductions in black-and-white of many of the intricate and tiny figure compositions that illustrate the biblical narrative, as well as comparative illustrations of other related Bohun manuscripts. The latter are listed in full, with relevant literature, in an Appendix.
