A tight, clean, sound copy in red paper covered boards quarter bound in black cloth with metallic copper lettering on the spine with very minor overall shelf wear plus some very, very light soiling of the top outside paper edges plus some the book is very, very slightly shelf cocked plut there are the usual library stamps and pocket on the top and outside paper edges, title page, dedication page, back endpaper, and inside surface of the back board plus the dust jacket endflaps are glued down to the inside surfaces of the boards. The dust jacket shows no visible signs of wear plus there is the usual library label on the spine plus it is still in the original library mylar sleeve plus the endflaps are glued down to the inside surfaces of the boards. A woman named Beauty and a "big girl" leaves her family to set up a rural shelter where needy women can be rehabilitated. The idea is to design this shelter so that it will fail quickly leaving her with a cozy retreat of her own. Things turn out differently when a ferocious and intractable crew of thieves, drunkards, and runaways greet their new life with a raunchy stubbornness. She then insists that her charges eke an existence out of the wilderness and it turns the colony into something like Robinson Crusoe's island in a bad year. This is the author's first novel. the author is a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ingram Merrill Foundation plus she is a winner of the Whiting Writer's Award. 231p..
