Suite à un appel l'inspecteur Lefebvre se rend à la marina de Las Piernas pour surprendre en pleine transaction un trafiquant de drogue que la police n'a jamais réussi à faire condamner. En réalité le coup de fil était un leurre. Sur un des voiliers de la marina le policier découvre une personnalité politique Trent Randolph et sa fille assassinés. Seth le fils est transporté dans un état grave à l'hôpital où les médecins vont le tirer d'affaire. L'inspecteur rend de fréquentes visites au jeune garçon qui un jour lui confie avoir vu l'assassin dans sa chambre. Il a pu l'identifier grâce à la sonnerie de sa montre électronique déjà entendue sur le bateau. Les derniers visiteurs de Seth ayant tous été des policiers Lefebvre entame une enquête discrète sur ses collègues. Mais le meurtrier aux abois assassine Seth pour faire accuser l'inspecteur que les autres flics n'apprécient guère. Pour changer d'air Lefebvre s'envole dans son avion de tourisme et s'écrase dans un ravin. Dix ans plus tard l'épave est retrouvée et l'inspecteur Frank Harriman reprend l'enquête. Il ne trouve aucune trace du demi-million de dollars qu'était censé avoir touché Lefebvre pour éliminer Seth et il commence à mettre en doute la version officielle de cette affaire. Après Goodnight Irene voici un second volume consacré à la journaliste Irène Kelly et à son mari l'inspecteur Frank Harriman. Cette série créée par la romancière Jan Burke avec ses intrigues bien construites et ses personnages attachants devrait plaire à tous les amateurs des romans de Michael Connelly. --Claude Mesplède paperback.
