Discard your ancient formulas and earnestly counsel against any delay in beginning treatment, for thus only can he be discharging his full duty as a physician. To many of you this picture may seem overdrawn but, from personal experience, it seems to fit very closely those cases which have come under my observation. I shall confine myself in the discussion of this subject to the convergent variety of strabismus which is almost the only form met with in young children and is the most amenable to treatment. Let us first look at the etiology of this condition and see if here we cannot find strong reasons for its early treatment. It is rarely congenital, usually appearing at about two to three years of age, first noticed when the child is playing with small objects, both eyes not remaining fixed on the object. From time immemorial the exciting causes have covered a multitude of sins, from the imitation of others to anger, naughtiness or habits of turning the eyes to one side while playing with a ribbon of the hair. It has often followed contagious diseases, pertussis probably claiming by far the greater number. Heredity is without doubt an important factor. Holthouse reports that in 144 cases 46 were hereditary and he suggests that when heredity is operative the deviation is likely to appear at an earlier age. Among ophthalmologists since the earliest days, the causes resulting in monocular vision have been studied from the standpoint of structural changes in the muscles, faulty...
