His mother dies when he is still very young and his father abandons him, but his parental grandfather arranges for his education by coercing a cruel and abusive school master to provide Rory with education free of any tuition fee. Random is cast away before he can finish his studies, but he has a natural talent for languages (he speaks French, Greek, Latin and Italian), so he decides to make use of his knowledge and he sets off to travel, first to Europe, especially France and then to the West Indies, Africa and many other places around the world. He has lots of adventures, some funny, others dangerous, he even finds work on a ship and he is permanently looking for a wealthy lady who would marry him and provide him with a comfortable life. The adventures end well for Rory - he reconciles with his father and he comes into enough money to allow him to get married and settle down.The character of Roderick Random and his adventures are only partly fictional. For a while, Smolett served in the British Navy as a mate to the naval surgeon, and this employment allowed him to travel a lot, to see many interesting parts of the world and it also inspired some of Rory's adventures.
