Attractively bound in fulll period brown polished calf, spines with raised bands, contrasting red and green morocco labels, and elaborate gilt floral tooling (wear to joints; some rubbing to spines and boards). Robertson (1721-93), Scottish historian, educated at Edinburgh University, and that institution's eventual principal (1762-92); noted also for his 'History of Charles V' (1769) and 'History of America' (1777). Paper marbled in Stormont pattern to boards. 8vos (13 x 20.2cm). All edges red, top edges darkened. Hinges sound. Replacement laid paper endpapers and blank front and rear endpages to both vols. The second volume is printed in London by J. Bettenham for the same booksellers. Minor worm damage to fore-margin only of vol. II. from p. 17 to end of vol., mostly a single hole, with no impact on plates or text. A little faint scattered foxing. Small amount of pencil sidelining and single marginal pencil annotation to vol. I. List of subscribers to vol. I. (The subscription raised by Zachary Grey for this work is said to have been 'vast', totalling £1500 (ODNB).). Decorative end-pieces throughout. Portrait frontis engraved by George Vertue after Gerard Soest, from the collection of physician Richard Mead. With sixteen additional plates engraved by J. Mynde after William Hogarth, five of these folding. The first edition of Zachary Grey's edition of the text, with his preface and copious annotations. As per Lowndes (1858, vol. 2, p. 335), the 'Best edition': 'The cuts are beautifully engraved by Hogarth'. Originally engraved for the 1726 edition, Hogarth's lively plates, their satirical tone highly suited to Butler's work, were re-engraved for this edition. On their first publication, Hogarth's illustrations were so well-received that they led to an ambitious project to produce twelve larger illustrations of Hudibras, one of the triumphs of Hogarth's early career. Samuel Butler (bap. 1613, d. 1680), poet. His mock-epic Hudibras, satirising Presbyterians, Independents, and other factions involved in the English Civil War, was published in the immediate aftermath of the conflict to huge success.
